B irds soar and dive and play with the air currents. How do they do that? Let’s find out!
Have Fun!
The challenge of flight
F lying is not easy, whether you are a bird or a person trying to build and use an airplane. Both birds and people are heavy enough that we don’t just float around in the breeze like a single feather or a leaf.
B oth airplanes and flying creatures need to be as light as possible, streamlined so air flows around them smoothly, have lots of strength (from the plane engine or the bird’s muscles) and have some sort of rigid structure that can react and work with the flow of air.
W hen we want to fly there are several things working against us: Gravity: The Earth pulls at all objects, drawing them toward its center. That’s why when you jump in the air you don’t just keep on going: gravity pulls you back to Earth.
