Athena: The Rabbit Warrior

Prologue
In a land known as Gaia, there was a race known as the ancients. The ancients were a race that existed long ago and exceeded in technology. However, they eventually left Gaia and travelled to the stars in flying ships to find a new home. They never came back, leaving other beings to evolve and inhabit the world. Thus begins our story.

Chapter 1
In Gaia (long after the ancients left), where animals evolved into intelligent beings who could speak and build, there was a rabbit called Athena. Not a wild bunny you would find in a field, nor a household bunny. This bunny was a warrior who lived in a rural, farming village called Fallcrest. She had white fur and wore grey warrior armour and war paint (body paint that has different symbols, shapes and colours designed for going out to war). The war paint was meant to make her look intimidating (although you can’t really make a white bunny intimidating) and it was believed to give magic powers for protection. The animals had a high regard for nature and built various temples to worship the different elements of nature.
One day, while in bed, she sensed that something was not quite right. She tried to sleep, but couldn’t… sensing something was coming. She got out of bed, looked out the window and just saw the night sky and her neighbours’ houses. Still anxious, she put on her grey armour and went outside. After wandering for a bit, she suddenly heard loud noises and saw fire in the distance. When she ran towards the fire, she saw metal, humanoid beings destroying the village with lasers. These beings had a constant, blank stare and emotionless and expressionless faces. One of the beings spotted Athena and said, “Scanning life form.” They spoke in monotone voices and had a mouth hatch that opened to let out their unsettling voice, and then immediately shut when they stopped speaking. Disturbed by their cold, emotionless and electronic voices, Athena realised that these beings were humanoid robots. Before she could react, the robots said, “Scanning indicates warrior of primitive capabilities. It must be taken for modification.” Athena got out her sword and charged towards them without hesitation. When Athena was close enough, the robots zapped the sword out of her hands and punched her across the face. “Defiance is pointless,” the robots said in their monotone voices. “You shall be modified into us.” Athena got up off the ground and ran away knowing that there was nothing she could do to defeat them.
The robots continued destroying the village and taking or destroying animals with no one to stop them. Animals tried to resist and asked why they were doing this. The robots said, “We shall destroy all life.” Athena ran into the wilderness with just her armour and herself.

Chapter 2
The machines burned trees to the ground, set grass aflame and hunted down anything that wasn’t like them.
Athena was completely alone. She could help no one and no one could help her. She rested on a tree to think about what had just happened. She thought about their deep, black emotionless eyes and how dull and lifeless their faces were. She said to herself, “Those things are just so… unredeemable. I haven’t seen anything like them before.”
Suddenly, she heard a male voice from the distance saying, “Hey! Hey you! Come here!”
Athena walked to where the voice was coming from to only see a sword on a pedestal. She said, “I can’t see you. Where are you?”
“I’m here,” the voice replied.
Athena looked at the sword and said, “Are you the owner of this sword?”
“No! I am the sword!”
Athena stared at the sword confused and said, “Uh… okay? My name’s Athena. What are you called?”
The sword replied, “My name is Apollo, the magical sword of this forest. I called you to get me out of this pedestal. I’m sick of being on this pedestal with nothing to do but stare at trees all day.” Athena looked at the sword suspiciously because she thought that the sword could possibly cause trouble if it was freed. Apollo then said, “Look, I can tell you’re a warrior by your armour. You need a sword don’t you? I’ll help you with whatever problem you have in return.” Athena had no other choice: she wanted a new sword and someone to help her. She couldn’t just reject the offer in the situation she was currently in. She pulled Apollo out from the pedestal and told him what she needed help with. After she had explained everything that had happened he shouted, “Wait! Put me back on the pedestal! I don’t want to face metal beings who could zap me! Put me back at once!”
Athena carried him on her back. Smiling, she said, “We had an agreement. If I got you out from the pedestal, you’d help me with my problem. Don’t worry, I will try to keep you safe from the robots.”
After wandering for a bit in the wilderness, Athena said, “All right, we need to come up with a battle plan to defeat those beings. Do you have any ideas?”
“Well, if you want my personal advice, we should go to the Earth Temple where the spirit of the forest is. Hopefully there, you will be able to get more advice on how to defeat those robots,” Apollo answered.
Athena said, “Well… it’s not exactly a battle plan but all right. We shall now go to the Earth Temple.”

Chapter 3
Apollo showed Athena the way to the Earth Temple. Eventually, they both made it there. The temple was made of solid stone, with vegetation growing on it and faces carved on the walls. Without hesitation, Athena walked into the mysterious temple. Inside, she could see nothing but webs, dirt and some abandoned rooms. Suddenly, there was a voice deep within the temple saying, “There are some parts of Gaia that have the darkest of things. Things that go against everything we value. Those things are what you have faced.” Curious, Athena went further into the temple to find a knight’s armour standing in the centre of a large room. She heard the same voice saying, “If you pass this trial, you will show me that you are worthy of my guidance.”
Athena replied, “Can’t you just give me the guidance now so that I can defeat the robots?”
“Sorry, it is part of tradition. You go through a trial and I give you guidance. I know it is annoying, but it is tradition,” the voice answered.
Athena grumbled and got ready for the trial. The knight’s armour began to come to life and ran towards Athena to attack her. Athena jumped into the air and tried to hit the armour’s back. But it immediately turned around, blocked the attack and began bashing Athena’s sword with its sword (not a good first battle experience for Apollo). Athena quickly moved away, cut its legs off and then cut off its head. “There, I finished the trial. Can I speak to you now?” Athena said.
“Yes,” the voice replied.
Suddenly, the spirit of the forest appeared right in front of her floating in the air. It had the shape of a pigeon and glowed green. It glared at Athena and gave her vision explaining where the robots came from. In the vision, Athena saw explorers on the eastern side of Gaia conducting an expedition on a mountain. They found an ancient ruin that belonged to the ancients and began to study it. The leader of the expedition pointed out that there was an entrance and they should go in to find out the secrets that lay hidden.
They discovered a vast chamber beneath, with huge structures that contained cells with frozen robots inside. One of the explorers looked closer at one of the cells and shouted, “What is that?! Could this be an ancient?!”
Eager, the explorers found a switch in the centre of the room and turned it on unaware of what they were doing. Every cell slowly opened and the beings awoke from their long slumber. The robots climbed out of their cells and walked towards the explorers. The explorers were amazed and thought they had found the last remaini
