FOREWORD
I must state that it is a privilege to be asked to write the foreword toThe Official Port Vale Quiz Bookand it is a pleasure to accept.
I have been a Port Vale supporter since 1949/1950 when my
Uncle Bill Amos took me down to The New Wembley of the north in a wheelbarrow from High Lane to help along with hundreds of other Vale supporters to level the black ash and
shale that formed the base of the terracing at the new ground
in Hamil Road. Since then there have been many ups and downs, I remember the “Steel Curtain” in the days of Manager Freddie
Steele in the 50’s, the days when Stan Matthews was Manager
in the 60’s and we had great players like Colin Grainger, Billy
Bingham, Albert Cheeseborough, when my particular hero was
Bert Llewellyn, we had the youngest forward line in League
history. The Halcyon days of the John Rudge era when players
like Dean Glover, Peter Swan and Steve Guppy etc graced Vale
Park, there also have been many black days over the last 59
years but it is the good days you remember.
I would like to thank the supporters who have been and still
are the lifeblood of the club and hope that this quiz book not only gives much enjoyment but also teaches our younger
vii
supporters the history of the club and what a great club Port
Vale Football Club is to support.
This is the ultimate quiz book for all Vale fans, young and
old, the serious "anorak" or just a bit of fun. It is a MUST buy!
Best wishes Bill Bratt Port Vale Football Club (Chairman)

THIRDDIVISIONNORTHCHAMPIONS1929/30
Can you name the ‘County’ who finished runners-up to The Vale in the Championship race, one of only two teams to beat them at home in the League? Name the Yorkshire ‘Town’ which Port Vale beat 2-1 away on the opening day of the season. During the season The Valiants played four teams in the League whose name both begins and ends with the same letter. Name any two of the four. This team which sounds like something that used to be pushed along the streets, a club nicknamed The Bluebirds, finished bottom of the League. Who are they? How many of their League away games did Port Vale lose during the season – one, three or five? Can you name the Derbyshire-based side that finished fourth in the Third Division North in 1928/29, which knocked The Valiants out of the FA Cup during the season? Port Vale played this team, a club which was name-checked in a famous British TV advertisement for milk during the 1980s depicting a scene with two boys wearing Liverpool shirts. In the TV ad, one of the boys told the other that Liverpool striker Ian Rush told him that if he drank lots of milk he would be good enough to play for the team Port Vale beat home and away in season 1928/29. Name the team. The Vale hammered this ‘United’ 7-1 during the season, a team which would go on to contest and lose the inaugural League Cup Final in 1961. Name them. By how many points did Port Vale clinch the League title from the team in Q11? Name the team Port Vale met in the League who at the end of the season moved to Gateshead and became Gateshead Football Club. 2
