Séries ES et S Partie Compréhension A. 1) “the driver knows exactly where to go and how to get there”(ll. 2) 2) “it takes years to learn.” (l. 4) B. Réponse 3 C. “they flit around the city on mopeds, learning the streets” (l. 20) “They draw routes with marker pens” (l. 21) D. Brian Nayar has a negative opinion of Uber, which creates unfair competition. “Uber is hurting the industry he loves” (ll. 9‐10) “Uber is undermining an important British tradition dating back to 1865.” (ll. 15‐6) E. Black cabs have been part of the London landscape for decades. Cab drivers are more than just people who take customers from one place to another, they are guides who hold essential knowledge about their city. “Getting into the back of a black taxi is the quintessential London experience.” (l. 1) “I’m also an ambassador for this great city” (l. 27) F1. a) London b) Sydney c) black cab F2. The two protagonists are planning to drive a long distance in an original car. There are lots of uncertain elements, and they seem very unprepared. They will need to improvise in front of difficulties, that’s why the term “adventure” seems appropriate.

Séries ES et S
Partie Compréhension
A. 1) “the driver knows exactly where to go and how to get there” (ll. 2)
2) “it takes years to learn.” (l. 4)
B. Réponse 3
C. “they flit around the city on mopeds, learning the streets” (l. 20)
“They draw routes with marker pens” (l. 21)
D. Brian Nayar has a negative opinion of Uber, which creates unfair competition.
“Uber is hurting the industry he loves” (ll. 9‐10)
“Uber is undermining an important British tradition dating back to 1865.” (ll. 15‐6)
E. Black cabs have been part of the London landscape for decades. Cab drivers are more than just people who take customers from one place to another, they are guides who hold essential knowledge about their city.
“Getting into the back of a black taxi is the quintessential London experience.” (l. 1)
“I’m also an ambassador for this great city” (l. 27)
F1. a) London
b) Sydney
c) black cab
F2. The two protagonists are planning to drive a long distance in an original car. There are lots of uncertain elements, and they seem very unprepared. They will need to improvise in front of difficulties, that’s why the term “adventure” seems appropriate.
G1 a) FALSE: “he had said yes in about one second flat” (ll. 12‐3)
b) TRUE: “I put my doubts about his engineering prowess aside” (l. 12)
G2. Leigh seems like a very spontaneous person, but also someone who may be a bit light‐headed and not quite reliable.
H1. a) a pub
b) a map
c) a laptop
d) Paul Archer
e) Leigh
f) Johno
H2. “we made our first – and possibly gravest – error of the trip: never plan anything in a pub.” (ll. 20‐1)
I. “There were no options other than possibly a yellow New York cab, and it was agreed that that was hardly very British.” (ll. 22‐4)
J. 1) TRUE: “sketching out a roughly direct route” (l. 26)
2) FALSE: “some bright spark pointed out that a true black cab driver would take the longest route possible” (ll. 26‐7)
K. The environment seems very urban, but also quite derelict. It must be in a rather run‐down area of Glasgow.
L. The cab is hovering in the air, supported by balloons.
M. The artist may have wanted to choose a popular setting in order to stress the universal dimension of the cab. The stern brick wall also makes an interesting contrast to the fun concept of a balloon cab.
N. Documents A and C consider the cab as an institution, an essential part of the British culture. In document B, the cab is taken as a vehicle for adventure, and this aspect is also reflected in document C.
Partie Expression
F. He means that a GPS will only take you from one place to another, but cab drivers also enable their patrons to have a human experience, and a device will never replace that.
G – K.Comme pour les séries ES – S
L1. They see cab drivers as extroardinary people who are responsible for a whole aspect of the British culture, so they probably admire them.
L2. Their itinerary is greatly influenced by how they think a real cab driver would behave. They choose a very indirect route, because cab drivers have a reputation of taking longer itineraries in order to make more money.
M – P.Comme pour les séries ES – S
Partie Expression
