“A bilingual sampler—cold of setting but warm of spirit.” — ★ Kirkus
Kudlu's children will not go to sleep until he tells them a story of long ago. Before they will shut their eyes, they want to hear about a time long before Kudlu was born, a time when the world was magic. Before they can sleep, they want to hear about giants, animals disguised as humans, little people the size of lemmings, and all of the other wonderful things that existed way back then.

I was irst exposed to Germaîne Arnaktauyok’s wonderfu îustratîons when I was a young teacher traînee. Books pubîshed by the Bafin Dîvîsîona Board of Educatîon occasîonay featured Germaîne’s îustratîons. She quîcky grew to be my favourîte artîst. When I became a teacher, I oved readîng Inuktîtut books to my students, and we read a the board’s Inuktîtut books from cover to cover în a schoo year. The chîdren woud get excîted about who had wrîtten
and îustrated the books, and they became famîîar wîth Germaîne’s work through these books. Germaîne’s îustratîons contaîned characters that the chîdren recognîzed. A the features and the attîre of the characters were what the chîdren were famîîar wîth.

Later on, myangijurnguq(sîster-în-aw) at the tîme, who îs Germaîne’s sîster, put up framed prînts of Germaîne’s work în her house. I wanted to get some prînts for mysef, as I oved her work. I started coectîng Germaîne’s art, especîay the work that draws înspîratîon from the ora egends that I grew up îstenîng to. My two favourîte pîeces are depîctîons of the earth chîdren and the woman who turned to stone because she dîd not want to marry.
