ACT ONE
 SCENE ONE
From within, the hoot of an owl is heard, an indication of an abomination in the land. Mrs. Evelyn is seen seated on a couch in her sitting room gripped with fear and deep in thoughts concerning the nightmare she had the previous night.
MRS. EVELYN:(Cleaning her teeth with the help of a chewing stick and soliloquizing) I can't place my hands on the reason why I keep on having this dream. My only fear is that most of my dreams usually come true.(Sighs) God forbid that this one comes to past...tufiakwa! This bird of misfortune whose evil cry bring alongside with it death and sorrow, why must you hoot this morning in my compound? Please stop hooting, stop! But come to think of it, this seems to be the same nightmare I had three years ago before my husband died. Could this dream have anything to do with the sudden change of

character in Emma, my son? Indeed, I am filled with fear and I can't keep this to myself all alone because a snake seen by one person usually turns into a python. (She calls for Uchechukwu her house help) Uchechukwu! Uchechukwu!! Uchechukwu!!!(There is no response, so she calls out with a louder voice)Uchechukwu Uzuakoli !!!
UCHECHUKWU:(Answers and rushes in) Yes! Madam I dey come.
MRS. EVELYN:in an upset manner) (Speaking You accursed child, I know you will wait for me to scream out my senses before you come running to answer me. Stupid boy! Come on, will you take your corpse out of here and go and call me my husband's brother, Anyanwu, before Amadioha, the god of thunder descends his wrath upon you.(Uchechukwu rushes out to accomplish his mission then she kneels and begins to talk to herself again) I am scared. Our ancestors, our gods, please protect us, your offspring, from

the evil eyes of our enemies in this wicked world. Please come to our rescue. Amen. (A knock is heard on the door she sits down and adjusts herself) Who is that? Please come in the door is wide open.(Anyanwu comes in).
ANYANWU:(Looking uneasy and slightly frightened)is everything alright? This Evelyn, one you sent for me this early morning, I hope all is well or have the goats escaped from their ropes? Has heaven descended upon earth?
MRS. EVELYN:sit down Nna Anyi. Please (Anyanwu sits opposite her)You know that a frog does not run around in broad daylight for fun. It is either it is running away from something or it is chasing something. Please sit down and make yourself comfortable first of all.(Anyanwu sits and adjusts himself while she tries to go and get him kola which he rejects politely due to his anxiety about what the problem could be)something bigger than

a crab has visited its nest today. That is why I sent for you.
ANYANWU: I hope it is nothing serious or anything relating to death? Please just go ahead and hit the nail by the head. What has happened?(Still scared and confused).
MRS. EVELYN:I had a very terrible nightmare last night and since then I haven't been at ease because most of my dreams have never ceased to come true and I don't want this one to come to past. The most terrifying thing about it is that it is the same dream I had three years ago and I remember that four days after my husband kicked the bucket. Nna Anyi, I am very terrified because I feel deeply within me that something terrible is about to happen. My heart is just crowded with a myriad of thoughts. I am deeply troubled.

ANYANWU:(Now relaxed it wasn't a serious issue calmly takes a deep breath to calm his nerves before he began to speak) Chai! Evelyn, you are funny. Ah ah, do you know I nearly had a heart attack when Uchechukwu came to call me this early morning saying that you sent for me and that it was very important I rushed here immediately? You could imagine what kind of thoughts clouded my head at that moment and even when I came in and saw the look on your face my heart also jumped into my stomach and now you are saying that the only reason for all this heartache is a common dream? This is ridiculous.
MRS. EVELYN:(With all seriousness)Nna Anyi, I am very sorry that I instilled a lot of fear in you. Believe me, I didn't mean to do so. Besides that Nna anyi, it is not an ordinary nightmare as you call it.
