This superb book of the Fox Terrier was first published in London 1889 and even today remains a classic book of the breed. First editions are very rare, expensive, and much sought after. Vintage Dog Books have now republished it, using the original text and the splendid illustrations by the famous dog artist Arthur Wardle. Rawdon Lee was a celebrated author of several important dog books and was Kennel Editor of "The Field." The books one hundred and fifty-seven pages contain seven detailed chapters on: Old Writers on Terriers. History and Origins. Terrier Values. Early Shows. Famous Dogs. Ear Dropping and Other Malpractices. Kennels. Scale of Points. Working and Training. Wire-haired Fox Terriers. Yorkshire and Devonshire Strains. Rev. John Russell's Terriers. Breeding and Rearing. Preparing for Shows. List of Clubs. Etc. This is a fascinating read for any Terrier enthusiast or historian of the breed, but also contains much information that is still useful and practical today. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing many of these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

PREFACE.
A VOLUME such as this purports to be, devoted to a variety of terrier, would twenty years ago have been considered altogether superfluous. Now, in 188 9, so popular have dogs grown, and such attention is given them, that a book which in its entirety tells of the variety most popular of all—the Fox Terrier—as he has been and as he is, becomes, as it were, one of the necessities of the day. And so I was requested to do the best I could in the matter. The result of my labours is given in the following pages, and if the reader fails to find any novelty therein, he will, at any rate, have arésuméof the history of the smooth-coated and wire-haired fox terriers, and some few trifling scraps of information that have not hitherto appeared in print. That this little dog does actually possess a status in society may be inferred from the fact that, in addition to a monthly journal (The Fox Terrier Chronicle) to look after its interests, there are a number of special clubs to do likewise; a parent cl ub, with ten minor and more or less local, institutions. The Fox Terrier is now best known as a dog for exhi bition purposes, and as a companion. This notwithstanding, I have not altogether lost sight o f the purpose for which he was originally given to the world; and believing in his courage, which I have often seen tested to the utmost by “flood and field,” have endeavoured to maintain his character as a sporting dog. The illustrations, from drawings by my friend Arthu r Wardle, are, I think, thoroughly successful —the larger ones as portraits, the vignettes as ornamental and characteristic. With regard to the frontispiece, where those good old terriers, Grove Nettle, Jock, and Tartar are depicted, the portraits are taken, in so far as the bitch is concerned, from a painting by Turner, kindly lent for the purpose by the Rev. C. T. Fisher; and with regard to the two dogs, from photographs issued at the time these celebrities were in the flesh, and invincible on the show bench. Three thorough terriers in every respect, and if somewhat unlike in type, they combine all the essentials required to perpetuate and improve a variety. Should this little volume have a favourable reception, it is likely to be followed by others dealing in turn with the various breeds and strains of the dog as they are known in this country. RAWDON LEE. BRIXTON, LONDON, April, 1889.
