The best of The Wall Wizard

Painting is an inexpensive yet impactful way to redecorate a home. But in a down economy, most homeowners can't afford to hire a pro to do the dirty work. This book represents the best of The Wall Wizard's previous books, Painting Secrets, Faux Finish Secrets, and Wallcovering Secrets. Readers will get helpful, economically mindful tips, advice, and guidance on how to use paint, faux finishes, and wallcoverings that accomplish high-quality, professional-looking results.

  • Focuses on painting with smaller sections on faux finishes and wallcoverings (including both how to apply and remove them)
  • Sidebars and tips address technical questions
  • Covers green alternatives to toxic, hazardous, and environmentally harmful products

With his personal, upbeat, first-person approach, bestselling author Brian Santos shows readers clearly and succinctly how to roll up their sleeves and accent any room of the house.

Dedication
This book is dedicated to YOU!
Within these pages we will explore the mysteries, mistakes, and magic of decorative finishes and reveal that Wall Wizards are made, not born. It took me more than three decades to learn the tricks I share with you in this book. Once you ve learned my secrets, don t be afraid to use them. It is my hope that they will serve you well. Every time you apply them, you prove Dorothy was right: There really is no place like home!
Thank-Yous
It takes a village to raise a Wizard. My special thanks:
To my mom, for her artistic influence. To my dad, for his work ethic. To my grandfather, for instilling me with the power of why.
Thanks to Dan Weeks, who has collaborated with me on this and several other books to bring the voice of the Wizard alive on the page. To Wiley Publishing, Inc., especially Pam Mourouzis and Cindy Kitchel, for their belief in the magic of the Wizard.
To my children, Paul, Scott, and Kelli, whom I love, and who are the future.
And most of all, to my wife and partner, Virginia, who shares all my dreams. Thank you for all your love and support throughout our journeys together.

Meet the Wizard
That s so cool! How do you do that? I hear this all the time as I demonstrate painting, faux finishing, and wallpapering techniques in my workshops at home shows around the world. The question that inevitably follows my demonstration is Can I do that?
Yes, you can! With an understanding of the materials and techniques involved, almost anyone can create beautiful rooms. And once you know and master some basic principles, the variety of results you can create is virtually limitless.
I m a fourth-generation decorating contractor. My philosophy is simple: Knowledge is power. The real secret to success lies in understanding how to achieve the results you desire. I call this the why behind the how-to, and it is something most books, classes, and workshops never tell you. How can you know what to do if you don t understand why you re doing it? That s why I wrote this book: to reveal the science behind the magic of decorative finishes and show you how to create some magic of your own.
First we ll talk about how to use and combine color-the foundation of all decorative techniques. We ll discuss what tools and materials you ll need, and how to prepare the room-including my magic wallpaper stripping formula that allows you to strip up to 16 layers of wallpaper at once.
Then we ll explore the techniques themselves: First, paint, the fastest and least expensive way to transform a room. Next, faux finishing, a way to create magical effects using paint, my fail-safe glaze recipe, and simple household tools. Finally, I ll share my Henry Ford Method of installing wallpaper. With it, you ll apply wallpaper faster, easier, and with less mess and frustration than many pros.
Along the way, I ll share tips, tricks, and techniques that will make your project go smoothly and take much less time than conventional methods. They re all based on a combination of common sense and professional experience.
My goal in this book is to give you the knowledge and confidence you need to create the home interior you desire-to turn a daunting chore into an exciting opportunity for self expression. When you look at decorating through Wizard eyes, you ll see the magic all around you.
So let
